201 stainless steel plate
Type 201 stainless steel is a low nickel, high-work hardening, austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel. Type 201 stainless steel is not hardenable by heat treatment. It may be substituted, in some cases, for other higher nickel content alloys. Stainless is created by extracting chromite from underground mines. The chromite is crushed to produce a chromite concentrate. The chromite concentrate is melted in an electric furnace with other raw materials (iron ore, manganese, nickel, etc.) use for the specific stainless type. After melting the material is formed into slabs and sent to a hot rolling mill. The rolling mill reduces the thickness of the steel and is cooled by water. The now coil is transferred to a cold rolling mill. When the material arrives at the cold rolling mill it is covered in black scale. It is sent through an annealing and pickling line to remove the scale.

What Is 201 Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Plate?
Stainless steel 201 plate has good formability, corrosion resistance, and workability. SS 201 plate is similar to SS 301. These stainless steel 201 coils (UNS S20100) are an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel that was originally developed to protect nickel. As mentioned above, these SS 201 coils (DIN 1.4372) were originally developed to protect nickel and are characterized by low nickel content.
Alloy 201 plate is a low-cost alternative to traditional Cr-Ni stainless steels (such as 301 and 304). At the same time, about half of the nickel content in stainless steel 304 is replaced by an alloy with manganese and nitrogen added. This results in higher strength than alloy 304.
